INTRODUCTION TO CARIBBEAN STUD

Caribbean Stud Poker is a unique poker variation based on 5-card stud where players play only against the dealer, not against other players and play with the cards they are give. This changes the way poker is normally played because players don’t need to bluff or change cards.

The goal of Caribbean Stud Poker is to beat the dealer’s hand. Because it is a simple game to play it’s often fast-paced and very exciting, even though the dealer has a fairly large advantage over the players at the table because he plays against them one-on-one.

Caribbean Stud is not a game often associated with big wins in comparison to other casino games like Blackjack but it nevertheless is a great game for beginners new to poker and online casinos.

CARIBBEAN STUD RULES

Caribbean Stud generally follows a few standard rules:

•    The dealer’s hand must meet qualifying requirements in order to pay out odds on a player’s hand. This means the dealer’s hand must contain an ace and a king in order to qualify. If the dealer does not hold these cards in his hand the player’s challenge is voided and they receive a 1:1 payout on the ante bet.

•    If both hands are equal it is considered a ‘push’ or tie and the bet is kept by the player.

•    A player may only play one hand per round. Multiple hands are not permitted.

•    Cards are never exchanged or changed.

•    A push will be give to any hand that is dealt an incorrect number of cards.

•    All cards are required to be within sight of both the dealer and all players at all times.

HOW TO PLAY CARIBBEAN STUD

Caribbean Stud Poker begins when a player places his ‘ante’ bet. Five cards are then dealt to each player and the dealer with the dealer turning over one card is his hand for the players to see. Players can then pick up their cards and see what hand has been dealt and can gauge, using the dealer’s showing card, if their hand is better or worse. If the hand is weak or the player feels it will be worse than the dealers, they can fold by clicking the appropriate button (‘surrender’ is another button option). If the hand seems strong players then need to click the ‘challenge’ or ‘play’ button which will double the ante. The dealer then reveals his hand and compares the hands across the table. Whoever holds the best hand wins (see the Guide to Poker for details on poker hands) and odds for each hand are always listed at the table.

Caribbean Stud also often offers a progressive jackpot attached to the game. To play for the progressive jackpot an additional, smaller bet is required to ensure if you have a hand that pays the progressive or a percentage of it, you win regardless if the dealer has qualified or not.

Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy

Poker is one of the few casino games that relies more on skill than chance, as the outcome depends entirely on the decision the player makes. This makes playing strategies for all forms of poker a bit more complicated to learn. Here are some basic strategies to get you started before you move on to the more complex work.

The most important thing about playing Caribbean Stud Poker is that you should understand the odds and payouts. Caribbean Stud is based on only one hand and no cards are ever exchanged, so it is very important that players know the specific payouts for each hand and probability of obtaining winning hands.

There are two basic strategies when playing Caribbean Stud Poker. The first is that players should always raise when they have a pair or any higher hand. The second requires that they should fold when they have less than the dealer's qualifying hand of Ace and King, These are the golden rules, and you should stick to them if you want to win!

Next, you should assume that the dealer's hand will qualify at least half of them time, which makes it hard to make a decision when he does qualify. The dealer is required  to turn one card up (this is called the “up card”) while leaving the others facing down. If the Up Card is an Ace or a King, you should assume that the dealer will qualify.

If you have an Ace/King hand, then you should play any hand that is higher. Because the dealer only qualifies half of the time, it is safe to assume that if you hold this hand, you have a good chance of winning at least half of the time.

The last strategy is called the “side bet”, which is a very high risk strategy. In Caribbean Stud, the side bet can act as insurance in case the dealer does not qualify. If you receive a winning hand and the dealer does not qualify, this ensures you can still receive the jackpot. In this case, if you didn't place the side bet you would only receive your ante bet. The side bet is a small price to pay for the possibility of winning a jackpot. However, the odds of being dealt a straight is 1 in about 650,000 and a flush is 1 in 72,000 so we don't encourage making side bets on a regular basis.
